#5 Movie: Starship Troopers
Much like Gattaca, I got this movie in the bargain at Big Lots. Seriously, they may not have the biggest selection of DVDs, nor do they have the biggest selection of anything at Big Lots, but you can find some classics in their bargain bin. Anyway, how about I start talking about the actual movie! Starship Troopers was Paul Verhoeven’s spoof of propaganda movies which he grew up watching in Holland. I don’t know why, but there is something about this movie that I love. It’s certainly a good comedy, and certainly a good sci-fi, but there is some other element that makes this movie an instant classic. Maybe it’s the Bugs of Klendathu, maybe it’s the fact that this another love-it/hate-it movies, or who knows. There is just something about this movie that makes it fantastic.
#5 Game: Metroid Prime (Trilogy Edition)
Oh yeah! Metroid Prime! The best Metroid game evar (with an ‘a’)! When Nintendo announced that Metroid Prime would be a First Person Shooter developed by some random studio in Texas named Retro Studios, you could almost hear a collective groan travelling across the world. I mean, the Metroid series? As a shooter?! Why? When the game came out, everyone rushed out to buy it just to see how bad it was. Oh wait….. it wasn’t bad….. and it actually stayed as an adventure game….. with shooter… elements….. and it’s really atmospheric…… and it’s got a good story….. Holy dang, this game is awesome! It’s actually good! Suddenly, the whole world had a double-take, and now no one could deny that Retro Studios were the perfect company to handle this kind of project. They managed to make Metroid Prime have all the things from previous games into one shiny new package. The adventure elements were there, the shooting was perfect, the story was brilliant, the graphics still wow to this day, and they even made it better when they re-released it in Metroid Prime Trilogy! I don’t know how Retro Studios fit Metroid Prime and it’s two sequels on one disc with achievements and bonuses galore, but also improved the already solid controls! Yay!
