Since this is my first real post, I’ll go with things I know well. A) Top Ten Lists, and B) Hilarious movies. In honor of the comedy classic Spinal Tap, I decided to make my lists go up to ELEVEN! Please note that the ‘Epic Scale’ goes up to 11 as well. Anyway, let the list begin!
This film is often heralded as a classic, and it certainly is. The film focuses almost entirely on Danny Noonan trying to get into college by impressing Elihu Smails, the co-founder of Bushwood Country Club. Hilarity follows as gophers, hi-tech golf clubs, and insane trick shots are introduced. Rodney Dangerfield steals the show as the hilarious Al Czervik, but Michael O’ Keefe, Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, and of course Bill Murray certainly have their moments. Don’t go into this movie expecting a funny movie, instead go into it expecting a hilarious movie.
Best moment: I laughed my head off during the explosive ending, espicially the one guy ignoring the chaos going on and simply focusing on the ball.
Epic Scale: 9.5
10. Shaun of the Dead
Ok, this movie is simply, truly, one-hundred percent hilarious. British Romantic Zombie Comedy may be a mouthful, but it describes this film pretty well. The film follows the few ups and numerous downs of Shaun’s everyday life. The film starts before the zombie attack and ends once the whole mess is cleared up. Shockingly, the film features very few zombie moments, focusing more on Shaun(who fights with a cricket bat), his roomate Ed, his ex-girlfriend Liz, and Liz’s friends, David and Dianne. The ending is brilliant and sweet, a great finish to an amazing film.
Best Moment: The zombie girl in Shaun’s yard makes me laugh everytime I see it.
Epic Scale: 10
9. Spinal Tap
Spinal Tap at number nine? Yes, Spinal Tap is a classic, but I feel that there are simply funnier movies out there. Of course, don’t think I dislike Spinal Tap, I did put higher than Shaun of the Dead and Caddyshack didn’t I? This mockumentery about the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap follows the story of David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls, Nigel Tufnel, and Ian Faith. Watching the ups and downs of the band’s journey through the musical genre of heavy metal is hilarious, and the film makes you laugh every step of the way.
Best Moment: The Stonehenge scene is one of the most ridiculous moments in film history.
Epic Scale: 8.5
8. Monty Python’s Life of Brian
Like Spinal Tap, Life of Brian is a film comedy classic that many people consider the greatest comedy ever. Unlike the other Monty Python on this list (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), Life Of Brian actually get’s a great point across. Just watch the “respect the shoe” scene and you’ll know what I mean. Although Life of Brian is not the funniest Monty Python film on this list, it does feature some great moments. The random UFO scene, the bartering scene, and one of my favorite scenes ever……
Best Moment: The Biggus Dickus scene! EXTREMELY funny! It is the definition of funny! Another great scene is where Micheal Palin can’t say the letter ‘r’.
Epic Scale: 10.5
7.Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
2001: A Space Oddyssey is a great film, but Dr. Strangelove is still my favorite Kubrick film. Because it’s hilarious. This film follows the idea that if a crazy general obsessed with “bodily fluids” decided to drop a bomb on Russia, and then if Russia happened to have a doomsday device that covers the world with radioactive gasses for around one-hundred years in case a bomb is dropped on them……and you have one of the best stories in movie history. The title character will make you laugh everytime he shows up, as well as the general I metioned before. Dr. Strangelove manages to be a funny movie that actually isn’t a comedy, it’s a war movie. The spectacular finale proves that there isn’t always a happy ending, and that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
Best Moment: Dr. Strangelove’s Nazi hand. It’s impossible to describe how funny it is.
Epic Scale: 11
ZOMBIES! In my opinion, the greatest (and most likely to be real) monster ever! I love Shaun of the Dead, but in my opinion, Zombieland is better. Like Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland is a Romantic Zombie Comedy. Unlike Shaun of the Dead, however, Zombieland focuses more on the zombies. Columbus is easily one of the best, and most realistic, characters in film history, and Talahasee has so many epic moments that I could devote an entire article to him and still not list them all!
Best Moment: Bill Murray’s cameo. Hilarious.
Epic Scale: 11
“I guess I picked the wrong time to stop sniffing glue!” This one of the funniest movies out there! It’s also a classic that spoofs disaster movies. The story goes like this: when everyone except ex-soldier Ted Striker become sick from food posioning, Ted must land the plane safely. It’s not the plot that makes this movie funny though, it’s what’s going on in the backround. Scenes where the control tower tries to inform Ted about how to land the plane would be quite serious if people weren’t dumping dirty laundry into random machinery in the backround.
Best Moment: There is one scene where a nun is reading Boy’s Life magazine and a boy is reading Nun’s Life magazine. I nearly fell off the couch laughing.
Epic Scale: 10
“May the Shwartz be with you!” Sure this movie is a little cheesy, but it plays off that cheesieness brilliantly. For example, the story is basically about an alien race, the Spaceballs, running out of air. So they decide to steal it from the planet Druidia. Cheesy! This Star Wars spoof pokes fun at not only Lucas’s masterpiece, but also movies such as Alien, Planet of the Apes, and Star Trek. One particularly well done scene at the beginning has a giant ship slowly moving across the screen in a very Star Wars-ish way.
Best Moment: The Alien spoof scene near the end of the film is great. You’ll remember it for the rest of your life once you see it.
Epic Scale: 9.5
Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME. It (like Dr. Strangelove) would be an excellent film even without the comedy. The humor in this propaganda spoof is a bit more subtle than the other films on this list. Scenes where Neil Patrick Harris is wearing a Nazi-ish uniform may not sound too funny, but if you think of him as Doogie Howzer and not the mind reader he plays in the film….. It’s hilarious.
Best Moment: The part where the soldiers are showing the children their rifles made me laugh for five minutes straight.
Epic Scale: 11
2.Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
This movie makes me laugh just thinking about it. A James Bond spoof, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is about Austin trying to defeat Dr. Evil (he didn’t spend four years at Evil Medical School to be called ‘Mr.!’), and along the way encountering plenty of hilarious characters. O’Brian, the Irish assassin, Frau, a German attack/defense specialist who screams everything, and Dr. Evil’s right-hand man….. Number Two…..
Best Moment: Any scene with Dr. Evil and his son, Scott Evil.
Epic Scale: 10
1.Monty Python and the Holy Grail
If you haven’t seen this movie, you need to step away from your computer, go to the store, buy it, and watch it. This film is simply a must-see for anyone with a sense of humor. The tale begins with King Arthur gathering his Knights of the Round Table to take to Camelot, only to decide not to go because it’s “a silly place.” Then they get a message from God telling them to find the Holy Grail. Hilarity ensues as Arthur heads to the Castle of Aaaahhh, tries to use a Trojan Badger to sneak into a castle (and fails), and tries to get over The Bridge of Death. Oh yeah, and it gave us the single greatest line in movie history: “Strange women lying in ponds distributing cutlery is no basis for a system of government!” Very true.
Best Moment: The whole movie!
Epic Scale: What do you think? (11)
